No Fool in this Garden!

This past October, restoration projects throughout our region got a boost from the garden of Louise Goulet, long-time member of GOERT’s Native Plant Propagation Subcommittee, and the most recent winner of our Acorn Award. Louise dug up and donated over 1000 tiny bulbs of Fool’s Onion (Triteleia hyacinthina) from her native plant garden, to GOERT, community groups, and individuals carrying out restoration projects in over a dozen places, including Anderson Hill, Government House, Harling Point, and Uplands Park.

“A rule of thumb is to plant the bulbs to a depth of up to three times the size of the bulb,” says Louise, although it’s important to plant them more than 1.5cm deep to prevent possible freezing.

“Some of the bulbs are already sprouting – put the tip of the growth no less than half an inch into the ground. Also make sure you have good drainage so your bulbs do not rot away. Putting a bit of some well-draining mulch on top of the bulbs (e.g., some oak leaves or SeaSoil, no more than one inch) can also help prevent freezing.”

You can learn more about propagating and growing native plants in our Native Plant Propagation Guidelines. Louise has spent many years building her beautiful native plant garden, and we are always grateful for her generosity in sharing her knowledge, enthusiasm, and seeds and plants, and for opening her garden to the public each year to inspire us during Native Plant Garden Tours.
